Most automations that fail do not fail for technical reasons: they fail because someone automated a process nobody had taken the trouble to describe. These ten questions are not about technology, they are about your organisation — you can ask them yourself, ask your teams, and sort things out without me.

The ten questions

Does the task come up often, and how long does it take each time?

Is the rule that governs this task written down anywhere?

Where is information typed in again?

What happens when it goes wrong today, and how do you find out?

Who decides, along this chain, and on what basis?

Can your data actually be looked at?

Have you tried before, and why did it not work?

What must not change under any circumstances?

Does personal data enter the process, and does it leave the European Union?

How will you know, six months from now, that it was worth it — and did you measure it beforehand?
